Morrisons to shut 132 ‘loss-making’ McColl’s stores – putting 1,300 jobs at risk

Morrisons has announced plans to shut 132 “loss-making” McColl’s stores as it warned 1,300 jobs are at risk of being axed.

The supermarket confirmed it would purchase the failing convenience store chain in May this year, as part of a £190million rescue deal.

It comes after McColl’s crashed into administration under the weight of a reported £170million worth of debt.

At the time, some 16,000 roles were at risk of being made redundant and 1,100 stores were in line for closure.

All 1,300 workers at risk from the closure plans announced today will be offered roles elsewhere in the company, Morrisons said.

The retail giant said last month that it would sell off 28 stores, in a move that was accepted by the Competitions and Market Authority (CMA) as part of its probe into the takeover.

The regulators said last week that it was set to clear the deal, which had been investigated over fears it could affect competition.

The CMA initially raised concerns over 35 locations.

Joseph Sutton, Morrisons convenience, online and wholesale director, said: “We have a great deal of work to do but there’s no question that McColl’s is a business with strong potential.

“I’m confident that the combination of McColl’s conveniently located stores and great colleagues together with Morrisons scale, brand, systems and fresh food expertise will lead to a transformation of the business.

“We very much regret the proposed closure of 132 loss-making stores but it is, very sadly, an important step towards the regeneration of the business.”

He added: “I am confident that McColl’s can, in the Morrisons family, once again become a growing, thriving and vibrant convenience business serving local communities across the UK.”

Morrisons said it expects some McColl’s stores to return to profitability as part of its turnaround plans.

There are currently 1,164 McColl’s stores trading, 286 of which are Morrisons Daily stores.

McColl’s was founded in 1901 as a single store, in Scotland, by footballer Robert Smyth.

It became a retail group in 1973 and floated on the London Stock Exchange in January 2014, with its stores expanding into England and Wales.

The company plunged into administration in May this year, saying it hoped “to preserve the future of the business and to protect the interests of employees” by finding a new buyer.

Morrisons secured its place as its new owner after reportedly beating petrol station powerhouse and Asda owner EG Group.
